Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to the most common questions we get about NexStride by Drive.
Our goal is to help you feel confident in your decision to invest in your independence.

What exactly is NexStride, and how does it work?

NexStride is a small, portable device that can attach to a cane, walker, or walking stick. It uses visual and audio cues—specifically a laser line and metronome—that are shown in research to improve walking and reduce fall risk.

Do you notice that you or your loved one are shuffling feet or taking a lot of small quick steps? NexStride can help users take slower, bigger, safer steps.

How does each type of cue work?

Audible Metronome: NexStride’s metronome emits an audible signal, engaging a different pathway in your brain to enable you to move forward. You step to the beat of the metronome. It guides your walking speed.

Visual Laser Line: The laser signal shows you where to step, giving your brain a target to focus on and a new way to engage with the body (this can also help correct stride issues). It guides your step length.

Will it help me or my loved one?

Research has shown that NexStride’s visual and auditory cues can benefit people with mobility impairments from Parkinson’s, Stroke, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, as well as people who are not diagnosed with any neuromobility disorder. If you have questions about whether NexStride will benefit you, it is best to speak to your physical therapist or doctor about your specific situation.

Can NexStride be used in physical therapy sessions?

Absolutely! That is a great way to make sure you or your loved one are using NexStride in a way that will most benefit your life. Most physical therapists are already familiar with these visual and auditory cues and help you get set up with them.
